1. a) Meteorology. a wind having a velocity of 74 or more miles per hour (on the Beaufort scale, force 12). b) a tropical cyclone originating usually in the West Indies, often accompanied by violent thunderstorms.
2. a storm with a violent wind and, usually, very heavy rain.
3. Figurative. a sudden, violent outburst: »
